I’m Tired of Wasting Food…

We waste so much food it’s too embarrassing to be honest about it here, but I’m going to SHARE what we are doing to try to cut down on all that we waste.

Our Answer?

Menus. Yes, I know how simple that sounds, but so far it’s working for us because we are making them out of the ingredients we have “that are going bad”. I’ve just started taking an inventory of what we have and rather than playing “Chopped” an hour before dinner which I find stressful for some reason – we look at the list and create a few menus at a time.

It’s Working For Us.

It’s working because it’s very flexible and we need that. Our appetites vary and we always have leftovers. So if we make a few days worth of menus, it actually lasts and makes about a week’s worth of cooked meals for us. It’s also working because it eliminates all the guesswork. I’ve been cooking so long now that I just need a meal plan. I can cook anything, but I can’t cook off the top of my head anymore. I guess that stage is over for me, but this is working so we are gonna run with it.

How We Did It…

We listed everything in the refrigerator and pantry that wasn’t a staple.

Blueberries Fish Acorn Squash Butternut Squash Green Onions Cauliflower Bacon Radishes Carrots Tomatoes Yogurt Cottage Cheese & Jalapeno Deer Sausage.

Then we added our staples.

Eggs Rice Bread Jello Pinto Beans Cornmeal & Cheese.

These are our MENUS for this week.

Pinto Beans, Sausage & Rice

Cheesy Cauliflower, Bacon & Rice soup with green onions

Roasted Radishes, Carrots & Green Onions with Sausage

Baked Fish, Acorn Squash and Pinto Beans

*Egg Dishes are a staple for us… Deviled, omelets, sandwiches, fried rice or on a stack of pancakes or pretty much anything.

And for snacks we have:

Cottage Cheese and sliced Tomatoes OR Cottage Cheese & Blueberries OR Cottage Cheese & Jello.

We haven’t thrown away anything this week so far and I’m not stressed about what to cook, so I think it’s working!

The “SECRET” to life is so simple…

Posted on February 6, 2018 by in Letters to My Children, The Good Life

I spent the first 58 years of my life trying to find the “SECRET” to life…

I thought I had found it so many, many times with each and every epiphany or aha moment I had. Each time I thought I had finally uncovered the “SECRET” missing piece in the puzzle of life and now things would finally get better. And I would feel good – for a day or two. Then I would ease back into real life and dirty laundry and forget all about the pearl of wisdom I had just learned.

This happened hundreds, probably thousands of times before one day I realized how simple the secret was…

The big “SECRET” is simply love. It’s so simple. It’s right there in front of us and we miss it. Jesus gave us the one commandment that would make life work for us… “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.” Mark 12:30-31

It’s said to make the world go round, because it does. Love is the only true power there is. Money, influence, and fame are but tiny, tiny things when compared to love – real love.

What is money? Here today, gone tomorrow, but love – that’s a big deal!

Love will take you places money can’t buy. Love will make you feel like a million bucks even if you don’t have two nickels to rub together. Most people will never see a million dollars, but everyone – absolutely everyone can give and recieve love. That’s the big “SECRET”.

I will never take my eyes off of love again, because it’s what makes life worth living. It’s so simple kids – please don’t miss it.

Creating a Whole NEW WORLD for Ourselves

Posted on September 28, 2016 by in The Good Life

We are always talking about the “good old days”, but you never hear anyone talking about how they are creating a “better days” today…

We have the best of both worlds at our fingertips right now. We have all the advancement in technology and access to the knowledge of all of our forefathers. You would think that we could combine the two and create an awesome world. We have both sliced bread and the internet and yet we are suffering through all this negativity and fear like we don’t have any choices in the matter. Knowledge is power. Part of Hosea 4:6 says “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge, because thou hast rejected knowledge KJV.” Are we not being destroyed little by little by not using the knowledge we have available to us to create a better place for ourselves?

Can we do it?

Can we create a world around us TODAY

that is better than the one we grew up in?

We have life coaches, personal trainers, self help books, seminars and online classes to help us create good lives for ourselves. Is it possible for us to expand on those ideas and create a virtual utopian society for ourselves and our families to live in?

A utopian society is an imagined community or society that possesses highly desirable or nearly perfect qualities.

We now know that we create our own world inside our heads. What we think about and dwell on creates the framework for our lives, so why can’t we create our own utopian type society as well? We cannot control the world we live in, but we can control our little corner of it. The peace we have and the love we share is up to each of us and each of our families. We are either contributors to the NEW world we want or just bystanders in the old world everyone is currently complaining about.

The next time you feel like complaining about the world, do something about your little piece of it instead. You have the power to change the world by making your little corner of it better. Use the power you have and encourage your family to stand up and make a difference too.

You do have the power to make a whole NEW world for yourself and your family, don’t miss the opportunity.

You can create your own GOODNESS in this world.

You can do anything for 90 days!

Posted on August 4, 2016 by in The Good Life

What do you wish you could change for the better? If there was one thing in your life you could improve on, what would it be?

Take a 90 day challenge with us!

We want to become better people… the people we were created to be. We want to bite off a something small for 90 days that we can throw ourselves into with gusto and accomplish something. What is that something? Well it will be different for all of us. What bothers me, doesn’t bother you, but we all have things that we wish we could do something about. And we can.

We believe the trick is to use self control sparingly!

No, really rather than sit back and do nothing, we want to use self control to fix something we know we can knock a big dent into in just 90 days.

  • Could you become a better golfer, writer, musician, etc. in 90 days?
  • How much closer to God could you get if you set a goal to study or meditate for 90 days?
  • Would 25 pounds and 90 days worth of exercise make you feel better?
  • How much money could you save if you just tried for just 90 days?
  • Could you become bilingual in 90 days if you applied yourself?

The road to character is paved with self control.

Stay tuned…

People Just Aren’t Willing to Die Anymore… Why Not?

Posted on January 27, 2015 by in The Good Life

Americans used to be willing to die for what they believed in.

When someone screamed “Help Me” people ran to their aid, now they look away and don’t want to get involved because they are afraid they might get hurt or killed. And maybe it’s not just that… Those that are willing to stand up for what is right are sometimes subjected to public ridicule, threats and attacks to their reputations as is well documented by how our police are treated in the media these days.

Perhaps the easiest cure is to go back a simpler time when we were not afraid to meet our maker. It is possible that a lot of this cowardice is prompted by fear of death. People didn’t used to be worried about dying or trying to prolong their lives and their youthful appearances. They considered it a fact of life and were comforted by the belief that God would take care of them.

The job of standing up for what is right does not just belong to our military personnel. If you live in America – it’s your civic duty to stand up and protect our freedoms, our children and our country. Freedom isn’t free, it should cost every one of us who enjoy living in this country.

Where There Is A Will There Is A Way

Posted on November 6, 2014 by in Good Stuff, The Good Life

A man dies and is standing outside the Pearly Gates waiting to see St. Peter. His name is Bill. As you would expect there is a special line just for Texans.

Bill says to a man named Frank who is in line ahead of him, ” I sure hope my wife will be all right.”

Frank turns around and asks, “What do you mean?” Bill proceeds to tell him that he is worried about his wife being all right without him. He explains that the house is paid for and that they had saved up around $50,000.00 together, but he is still concerned for her.

Frank asks Bill if he prepared a WILL before his departure? Bill informs him he had not. Frank asks if he had any other kids outside his marriage? Bill tells him he has one daughter who hates him and who is in jail for burglary.

“Well then the State of Texas will see to what your wife will get.” Frank says nonchalantly as he turns around to face the front of the line.

Bill is now consumed with curiosity and taps Frank on the shoulder to ask him to explain what he meant by his statement. Frank informs Bill that since he had a child outside of the marriage, the child would get half of the house and half of the money Bill and his wife had saved up.

Bill is horrified! He and his wife had worked very hard the last 10 years paying off the house and putting some money back in case something happened.

Seeing the look on Bill’s face Frank goes on to say, “Well Bill, where there is a WILL there is a way and without a WILL, your property gets distributed based on what the politicians say.”

Bill continues to stand in line, trembling now and sick with worry. He wonders how his wife would manage if she lost half the house and half the money they had saved? How could he leave his wife in that position? How could he have been so foolish?

Bill watched Frank pass through the gates and just before he was out of sight, he turned around and hollered back, “Bill, it’s never too late.” Then he was gone.

Bill found himself standing before St. Peter. St. Peter asked him if he had arranged all of his affairs so that his family was provided for? Bill answered that he thought he had, but now he didn’t think so. St. Peter frowned and asked Bill to step aside to let those who had acted responsibly for their families to pass by. He informed Bill that he would be taken to another Gate.

Bill awoke suddenly, soaked in sweat and trembling. He turned over to see his lovely wife laying beside him sound asleep. The Good News is, Bill was given another chance to take the proper steps to protect his family. Hopefully, you will too.

Summertime Treats

Posted on August 21, 2014 by in The Good Life

What is a treat?

Any event or item that is out of the ordinary & gives GREAT pleasure!

Treats like people come in all shapes, sizes and packaging. There are many GOOD things to like, enjoy and share, but only the BEST of these choices are really treats. And many treats can be FREE because they are not always things… Sometimes they are people.

Our friends, family and pets are SPECIAL TREATS not only because they are not purchased, but also because they choose to hang around us. Sometimes just having someone hold your hand is a real treat if you are a widow, widower or single. Phone calls from special people are free treats too.

We all get to choose our treats based on what we feel is special to us. Have you considered giving yourself or someone you love a treat today? To give someone a treat is a tangible sign of your love for them, because it means you heard them say what they thought was special.

That’s a real treat too… Someone who listens to you.

The Last Word

Church Matters

Church Matters

Children used to be taught right from wrong in church, at home and in school.

When any one of these fails to provide this teaching in a child’s life – they automatically have less opportunity to have GOOD VALUES imprinted on their hearts like the GOOD BOOK says…

Teach children how they should live, and they will remember it all their life. Proverbs 22:6 Good News Translation

Life is What You Make Of It / Money Won’t Change That!

Posted on January 21, 2014 by in The Good Life

We all have the same number of hours in a day to do with what we will. We choose our jobs, friends, hobbies and where we are going to live.

For years I drove past a trailer park on my way to work and wondered what my trailer would look like if I lived there? Would I have a nice patio set with a big loud striped umbrella sitting in my yard or one of the junk cars like several of them do?

Would I have a large deck

built with a flowerbed in the front and a garden in the back? That would suit me. Oh, I would also need a screened in porch. If for some reason I needed to move there, I would do the best I could with it to make it as comfortable and to my liking as I could. Why? Because it would be a big part of my life, it would be my home. See the rest of the story on page 8 at this link. http://santafegoodnews.com/issues/May2013.pdf

Living The Good Life

Posted on August 1, 2012 by in Good Stuff, The Good Life

Living The Good Life

Shame can be a good thing if it’s used to encourage people to do right and and make a good life for themselves and their families.

You don’t have to be ashamed of yourself forever…

But we should at least acknowledge that these things are wrong. It is not someone else’s fault, it’s yours. These are all personal choices that we all make. And we need to take personal responsibility for the status of our lives.

If you post all the awful details of your life on Facebook you should be ashamed of where you are & not posting trash like it’s something to be proud of.

Some of these things you can change now, others you have to forgive yourself for and learn from. As long as we act like these things don’t matter, we are lying to ourselves and to each other.

These things are just wrong and we all need to start saying so and help people by shaming them into making choices that give them back their self respect.

You cannot help someone if you act like what they are doing is acceptable. There is a fine line between shame and judgement and we need to find it. People do not need to be kicked when they are down, but neither do we need to act like its okay. We all know it’s not and not talking about it doesn’t make it go away or build anyone’s self esteem.

And these are not the big complicated issues like obesity, homosexuality or sex  outside of marriage.

These are just the basics. Surely we can get the basics right. Perhaps we lost the basics when the more complicated issues came along. The only way to get our GOOD Life back is to get our morals back, one person and one family at a time.

Do your part and make America a GOOD place to live in again.
